CHUM Food Shelf Summer Challenge to Provide Healthy Food for Children | Community Spirit
The CHUM Food Shelf is seeking donations that will be matched through the Open Your Heart challenge during the month of July, According to a press release, currently one in five families in Minnesota face hunger.
DULUTH, MN – Childhood hunger in our community doesn’t take a summer vacation. When children are home from school during the summer months, families often need more resources to fill empty plates. Currently, one in five families in Minnesota faces hunger, according to the Open Your Heart challenge.
You can help the CHUM Food Shelf provide for struggling families by donating in July, as all donations will be proportionately matched through the Open Your Heart challenge. This means that the more you donate to the food shelf in July, the larger our share of the $150,000 Open Your Heart grant will be.
This approach to hunger alleviation is effective because it brings communities together to solve a growing local concern. The CHUM Food Shelf has been distributing food to families since 1979. Today, the food shelf distributes 230,000 pounds of food annually and serves nearly 460 households with emergency food each month. Thirty seven percent (37%) of those we serve are children.
