Sign of Spring? Ice Breaking Begins Monday

Ice breaking in the Twin Ports harbor, one of the signs of spring in the Northland, will begin next week.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the Alder, Mackinaw, and Biscayne Bay will begin Monday in preparation for the 2013 shipping season.

The Coast Guard warned recreational users to use caution in areas including the Superior front channel, the Superior and Duluth harbor basins, East Gate, the entry channels into Duluth and Superior Harbor, and ice in Lake Superior adjacent to Minnesota Point.  Icebreaking efforts will increase as shipping requires.

There will also be icebreaking efforts in Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Taconite Harbor when needed.

Inquiries can be made by phone to Sault Vessel Traffic Service at 906-635-3232 or via email at SOOTFC@USCG.MIL.
